MAYHAM 2025: GET TO KNOW KING COOPA

by Austin Ham |

DJ SPOTLIGHT: KING COOPA

We’d like to introduce you to King Coopa – Cooper

Tell us how you got started—what sparked your journey into DJing/producing?
I’ve been a musician for as long as I can remember, I started banging on drums and hitting keys on the piano when I was still a baby. I started producing hip hop beats in middle school for my goofy friends which led me to dance music way further down the road. I started DJing in 2017 after seeing Flux Pavilion for one of my first dance music events and I thought, “I could do that.” So I got a controller, some studio monitors and headphones and the rest is history.

What are you most proud of when it comes to your brand or artistry?
I would say consistency is the thing I’m most proud of. I put in a lot of work to make sure I’m at least putting my best effort into every set I play or song I work on. I think people have an expectation that the artists they go watch will be doing their best when they go to a show, it’s what makes their experience better. And if it’s not the best every time, at least showing an effort of progressing to get better—and I think that’s something I’ve done a good job at maintaining.

What goals are you chasing right now as an artist?
Most of my goals that I’ve had for the King Coopa project I’ve either attained or surpassed already thankfully. But I’d say networking more, bringing more of my friends up, and playing out of the country would be my goals for the most part.

Any mixes, tracks, or recent releases you’d like people to hear?
Honestly not at the moment, I definitely have a few things in store for the rest of the year with this project but I’ve had most of my creative efforts focused on my new project’s EP.
But if you like a solid heavy mix, you can always go to my SoundCloud and check out Rise of the King.

What’s the most memorable crowd moment you’ve had in the Dallas scene?
Hands down the most memorable crowd moment I’ve ever had in Dallas was playing direct support for Subdocta (shout out HAM) at the Lizard Lounge (RIP).

If you could back‑to‑back with any Dallas DJ tomorrow, who would it be and what genre would you play?
I’m going to have to say either a gnarly bass house set with Dustin G or a rob a gas station type beat set with Finnuh.

Best advice you’ve gotten from another artist?
There’s always going to be someone better than you. There’s always going to be someone further ahead. Focus less on letting the success of others upset you, and more on maintaining the drive towards your personal goals. Cheer those people on, because if you don’t, who’s going to be there for you when you get there?

How do you discover new music to keep your sets fresh?
That’s privileged information—but everything has a price.
